How to make a homemade mouthwash?

Natural cosmetics teaches us how to take care of our body without using chemical or synthetic products. And in oral health we can also apply it. An ideal alternative is the use of natural mouthwashes, since the commercial type use alcohol as an active ingredient, which can affect the mucosa of the gums.

Tooth care depends on good oral hygiene, frequent brushing, flossing and, of course, regular rinsing. However, many oral health professionals agree that excessive use of industrial mouthwashes can cause artificial dryness in the gums, due to the high alcohol content in their formula. Consequently, beneficial microorganisms and bacteria present in the buccal mucosa would be eliminated.

On the other hand, using a natural mouthwash is an alternative that has become more popular in recent years, especially in the search for a mouthwash for gingivitis that is effective and not as abrasive.

And although the marketing of alcohol-free mouthwash from the best-known brands has expanded in the market, it is always healthier to use natural mouthwashes that you can even prepare at home with ingredients from your pantry.

What is the best homemade mouthwash

One of the best known homemade solutions is salt water for the mouth, often used after extractions, as it helps prevent infections after losing a tooth. Likewise, it can be used in the prevention of cavities because it allows the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and regulates the oral pH.

The ideal way to prepare this rinse is to place a tablespoon of unrefined sea salt in a liter of water and bring it to a boil to remove the chlorine content. Afterwards, this solution is allowed to cool and can be used twice a day, without exceeding the dose of 20 ml per day, rinsing for 3 minutes.

Another natural oral antiseptic that has become popular in recent years thanks to social networks is known as “Oil Pulling”, where coconut oil is the only ingredient. Its application is simple, a spoonful of this oil is used and it is passed all over the mouth, keeping it for 20 minutes.

Its function is to drag the dirt and harmful bacteria lodged between the teeth and the mucosa, acting as an oral disinfectant that reduces dental plaque and leaves a feeling of freshness.

bicarbonate and hydrogen peroxide

Among the allies of oral hygiene that you have in your pantry is baking soda, used for its antibacterial and whitening properties, as well as helping to prevent bad breath.

Preparing an antibacterial mouthwash with this ingredient is one of the cheapest options. Its preparation is very simple: you need a cup of water, a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of essential oil of mint or eucalyptus.

You just have to add all the ingredients in a jar with a lid and shake well until a homogeneous solution is formed. It is recommended to gargle and swish for 20 seconds after brushing.

For its part, preparing a mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide is also cheap and effective to take care of your oral health, because it helps to disinfect the oral cavity and in turn contributes to the whitening of teeth. To do this, you only have to place one part of hydrogen peroxide with three parts of water in a glass. Then you just have to use it like any other rinse after brushing.

However, you should be careful about using this ingredient twice a month, since its excessive use can erode tooth enamel and create sensitivity.

Another ingredient that we have in the kitchen and that can be used to complement oral hygiene is apple cider vinegar, which helps fight the microorganisms that cause bad breath. Its application has no great mystery, you just have to mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water and swish with this solution after brushing your teeth.
