Although it is made with rum, one of the typical Cuban drinks, the Daiquiri is actually the invention of an American engineer or so the history of this cocktail says. In 1896, Jennings Cox worked supervising the work of a mine near Daiquiri beach, next to the city of Santiago de Cuba. 

According to this story, one day Cox received a visit from some old friends and, running out of gin, which was the liquor they used to drink at the time, resorted to a bottle of rum, which he mixed with lime juice from a tree in his house. own garden. The combination was a complete success and it did not take long to become popular among the workers of the mine. It was an operator, a certain Giacomo Pagliuchi, who baptized the cocktail with the name of the nearby beach and, little by little, it became popular until it was introduced in the bars of the city of Santiago.

Later, Emilio González, a Spanish waiter, took the recipe for how to prepare Daiquiri to the Hotel Plaza in Havana where he works and where Constantino Ribalaigua, owner of Floridita, a Cuban club that continues to operate and that turned Daiquiri into one of the the most famous cocktails with rum in the world. In fact, El Floridita’s cocktail is so well known that even Hemingway, the famous American writer, wrote on one of the walls of La Bodeguita del Medio: “My mojito at La Bodeguita, my Daiquiri at El Floridita.” 

Although it is a cocktail that admits many variables, the ideal is that among the ingredients of the Daiquiri there is always white cane sugar. In the same way, although the lemon daiquiri is the most common, it can also be made with strawberries or other fruits. For example, at El Floridita, maraschino cherries are added to the original recipe of rum, juice and sugar, giving it a touch of flavour.

To start the Daiquiri, pour one part freshly squeezed lime, the teaspoon of sugar, and two parts white rum into a cocktail shaker. When preparing a Daiquiri, it is important to respect the order in which the ingredients are introduced. Next, add the ice to taste, cover the shaker and shake for 15 or 20 seconds.

To serve, it is ideal to use a strainer to filter out any bits of pulp that may remain in the lime juice. If you want to know how to make Strawberry Daiquiri, all you have to do is change the lime juice for a little strawberry juice.
