Margaritas are one of the most well-known tequila cocktails, appearing in many movies and television series. It is a very simple combination to prepare and is usually the best accompaniment for a Mexican dinner.

The history of this cocktail goes back to the times of the Far West and its invention is disputed between two bars in the Mexican city of Ensenada, the Cantina Hussong, an old stagecoach stop, and the Bar Andaluz in the Hotel Riviera. In theory, the name of the drink is due to an old Spanish lady named Margarita who used to drink this drink.

Although another version of the story points out that the cocktail was created in 1942 by the barman Lorenzo Hernández at the request of a client who wanted to surprise his wife with some cocktails with tequila and lemon. When the woman tried the cocktail and asked Don Lorenzo what that drink was called, the barman replied: “It’s called like you, Margarita.”

Whatever the real origin of this combination, it didn’t take long for it to go from Mexico to the United States where it quickly became popular. In fact, in December 1953 it was declared “drink of the month” in Esquire magazine, which made it even better known, to the point that Jimmy Buffet made a song about it, Margariteville.

In the Margarita, the ingredients are tequila, triple sec, which in most cases is usually Cointreau, and lime or lemon juice. When preparing it, keep in mind that there will always be twice as much tequila as triple sec and juice, so if you are going to prepare large quantities, do not forget this point.

One of the most striking features of this combination is that it is usually served in glasses decorated with salt. In Mexico, this drink is usually taken as an aperitif, as a night drink, but also during meals, since it is a good digestive.

To start preparing a Margarita, decorate the glasses with salt, to do this, pass a piece of lime around the edge of the glass and sink it in a plate with plenty of salt so that it sticks.

Next, pour the lime or lemon juice into the shaker. Although it is possible to use squeezed juice, the ideal is that you squeeze the fruit yourself to have fresh juice, if you opt for natural juice, you can use a strainer so that the pulp does not strain into the combined.

To continue, fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice, pour in the tequila and triple sec, close tightly and shake for 15 to 20 seconds, until the container is very cold. Finish by serving the cocktail in the glasses without letting the ice fall and enjoy this cocktail while you watch your favorite series on the best 4K television in value for money.
