The Gin Fizz could be the most consumed and appreciated gin cocktail in the world, at the same time it is one of the most important mixes in cocktails, since it was one of the first drinks of this type that were created, with a history dating back to 1887.
With a sober appearance and a very intense flavor, according to the history of cocktails, the Gin Fizz appeared for the first time in the 19th century in New Orleans and gets its name from the “fizz”, which is nothing more than the onomatopoeia of the bubbles from the soda when poured into the glass. It is a basic cocktail, whose ingredients are gin and lemon, so it has an infinite number of variations and derivatives, creating a wide range of different flavors.
The first mention of this combination appears in Jerry Thomas’s “Bartender’s Guide” in 1887, where up to six different recipes for this combination appear. In this sense, fizzes were very popular in the United States between 1900 and 1940, a period known as the golden age of cocktails. Its popularity is due, first of all, to the ease of preparation and versatility of its ingredients; being a suitable cocktail to refresh during the day or to enjoy at night. Second, its popularity is also due to its powerful flavor.
In this sense, the flavor of the gin stands out in a very particular way in the Gin Fizz. This is because the acidity and citrus flavor of the lemon highlights the herbal notes of the gin, making it a perfect cocktail to use your favorite gin, since the flavor will not be affected by the rest of the ingredients.
To prepare this lemon gin cocktail, we start with the basic ingredients. Although you can use lemon or lime juice bought at the supermarket, it is best to squeeze it yourself, as the taste will be much more pleasant. Once you have squeezed the juice, and you have the rest of the ingredients prepared, you just have to pour it all into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake vigorously for a couple of minutes, and a little longer if you have added the egg white, as this ingredient will take a little longer to integrate due to the ice. When all the ingredients are well integrated, serve in a chilled glass with ice, add the soda and, if you want, decorate with a cherry.
