Guide to buying metal detectors

Whether by hobby or by trade, when purchasing a metal detector you can not opt for a low-class design. In these cases, the important thing is that it is an instrument with a reliable measurement that helps to obtain metallic objects. Therefore, below we will review the properties that you cannot ignore when making the selection in our guide to buying the best metal detector on the market.

Shopping guide

Weight and ergonomics

When making a comparison of metal detectors, it is important to analyze the weight of the instrument, since the ease of being able to carry it from one place to another for a longer time will depend on this. Searching for metals is a job that requires time and dedication on a selected terrain, which can have a large amplitude radius, so the area must be monitored with the equipment in tow.

For this reason, a metal detector that is heavy will not be very functional, the same as one that does not have an adequate grip system. In this case, it must also have a good clamping mechanism that is ergonomic and makes it easy to carry it from one place to another. As for the weight, it is recommended that it has a resistant structure, but that it does not exceed 2.5 kilos.

Location and sensitivity

When one of these instruments is going to be selected, it is necessary to look for some characteristics, so that beyond being economical, it is equipped with a high localization level, as well as a sensitivity to be able to detect metals efficiently. Various models can be obtained on the market, with very specific functions, but within these characteristics, sensitivity to precious metals, as well as to others of lesser value, is a characteristic that improves the time of use, being possible that with the device can locate gold, silver, nickel and other metals.

Regarding the location, there are some models that emit a special sound, according to the type of metal that was found in the process of scanning the electromagnetic impulses. In this way, the user can know if the located metal is worth digging or collecting.

Design and fit

Metal detectors have different designs to suit various needs. There are models that are typical with a long rod, a plate or coil and a control box, to small prototypes that can be carried in one hand. The design has no major relevance, beyond the user’s tastes around color and weight issues.

However, what is more important is that the height adjustment at the user’s discretion can vary by a few centimeters. For this reason, it is recommended that the length of the rod can be adjusted, as this will guarantee that it is of a universal size and can be used by different users, including children.

Resistance

Quality cannot be neglected when purchasing one of these products. Therefore, if you want to know how much a metal detector costs, it would be appropriate for you to previously know its level of resistance and tolerance to certain elements. The greater resistance they possess, the better their quality in monitoring and location.

For this reason, it is appropriate that when making the choice, look for models that have impermeability, that is, that can be submerged at a shallow depth so that there is greater versatility of use and scans can be made in water or wells not deep. Similarly, it is recommended that they be dustproof and other elements.

Depth

There are many items to consider before buying in a hurry. If purchasing a metal detector is among your plans, it is recommended that it have a high degree of precision and effectiveness, with the scope to issue location results even in different terrains and at a considerable depth. In this sense, it is appropriate that the instrument selected has detection capacity between 3 and 20 meters deep.

Screen

Some models of metal detectors incorporate small screens into their designs, where proximity graphics are shown, as well as other values. These screens can be LCD technology. In the same way, through the display you can select some options to make the search more specific, increasing efficiency and reducing the time spent on locating metals.

Frequently asked questions

Q1: Where can the metal detector be used in Spain?

According to some experts and connoisseurs, Spain is one of the worst nations to pursue the hobby of searching for metal objects with metal detectors, because there is very closed legislation in this regard. Above all, there are problems when it comes to the marketing and sale of the objects obtained with the detector. In this sense, it is forbidden to enter archaeological and mineral zones with detectors, without having the corresponding authorization. In addition, it is forbidden to enter farms and fenced land, as well as nature reserves, assets of cultural interest and areas of historical heritage.

Q2: How to make a more powerful metal detector?

Metal detectors work with electromagnetic waves, so the power of these instruments will depend on the sensitivity towards metals. Therefore, when buying one of these devices, it is necessary that they have a high level of sensitivity and discrimination of metals, for a search with greater criteria. When it comes to building them, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to pull off a project with a longer range than a proprietary metal detector, but with an HD antenna you can increase its power.

Q3: What materials does a metal detector discover?

Metal detectors are instruments that, through impulses and electromagnetic fields, help to locate metals. There are different types, but in general, these kits are used to find ferrous metals that contain iron and steel, such as staples, clips, nails, among others. They also serve to detect non-ferrous metals such as gold, silver, aluminum and copper. The best and most advanced models incorporate technologies to detect all types of metals.

Q4: How to make a metal detector with a cell phone?

The advancement of technology has made many mobile teams incorporate magnetometers within their advanced options. These are sensors with which electromagnetic fields can be detected and measured. So, by installing a metal detector application, you can make effective use of this sensor, following some steps such as calibration and movement of the mobile.

Q5: How does a metal detector work?

The operation of a metal detector is simple. In essence, it is a coil or conductive spheres that surround an iron core. An electric current passes through this coil, which is what generates the electromagnetic field. Therefore, when the instrument is close to a metallic object, there is a variation in the magnetic flux, which produces higher electrical currents and alerts the user through sounds.

Q6: How to make a metal detector?

To make a home metal detector you need a portable radio, a calculator, tape, and a long stick or rod. First, it is necessary to take the radio and place it on AM wave outside of stations, to hear the waves that collide with the metal, so the volume of the speaker must be turned up. Next, it is necessary to stick a calculator, which will be the base of the detector, being necessary to attach the calculator to the radio with adhesive tape. When the connection between both devices begins, a static noise will be heard. Next, the effectiveness can be tested by taking a metallic object, if the sound changes to a beep, then the device works, only its range will not be very long.

Q7: Who invented the metal detector?

The invention of the metal detector dates back to the 18th century, after electricity began to be used. At that time, many academics and scientists were looking to create a device that would be able to locate metals in the earth. However, the first metal detector is not about searching for metal for commercial purposes. This instrument was created to save the life of President James Garfield, who was shot in July 1881 and it was Alexander Graham Bell who built a metal detector to locate the bullet in the president’s body and be able to extract it.

Q8: How to get license for metal detector?

In Spain, the use of metal detectors is restricted and it is necessary to make an application so that there is an authorization that will allow their use. In the case of Andalusia, it is necessary to process an application to use these instruments both on the beaches and in the field. To opt for this, an application must be submitted to the Junta de Andalucía, which must be accompanied by the authorization of the owner.

How to use a metal detector

Metal detectors are instruments with which you can locate all kinds of metals, ranging from expensive ones such as gold or silver, to others of lesser value. It is a hobby that many take for archaeology. In any case, there are those who do not know how to use a metal detector, so here are some tips to improve its use.

Check the instrument

Before using the metal detector, it is necessary to check the conditions of the equipment, according to the model. To do this, you have to remove it from the box or packaging and check that all accessories and parts are included in the package. If required, they must be assembled with the parts to be able to use the device.

Adjust the height of the metal detector

If the metal detector is a rod style, it is necessary to make height adjustments according to the person who will be using it. In case it is a child, the rod must be reduced so that it is according to its height and it can be used comfortably and safely, without hurting itself. The same will happen in case the person is taller, where the rod needs to be lengthened.

Turn on the metal detector

Next, you have to turn on the metal detector from the control box and again, according to the model, select the metal discrimination specifications (if any), as well as the level of sensitivity, terrain and depth.

Run a screening test

To check that the instrument works properly, it is necessary that before using it in an official way, it can be tested for metal detection. To do this, take a metal object and pass the metal detector over it to verify that the sound is emitted. If so, it is calibrated and can be used.

Select a site for metal detection

It is recommended to previously select the place where the metal detection process will be carried out and create a kind of map with specific areas to follow during the scan. In this way, you save time and avoid going through places that have already been reviewed.

scanning process

Hold the metal detector with your hands at a height that you consider comfortable and leave the coil or plate a few centimeters above the surface you have selected. Start the process of tracking or locating metals and pay attention to the sounds that the instrument emits and the LCD screen (if it has one). When you’re done, turn off your computer.

Clean and store the metal detector

After using the metal detector, it is appropriate that you clean it, removing impurities that may be on the plate, especially if it was used in the water. It is not necessary to use detergents or cleaning chemicals. Then store in a dry, instrument-appropriate space.
