Clean the colchon

To have a good daily performance, the quality of rest is essential, for this reason, it is important to carry out periodic maintenance on the mattress that we use daily, since this element can accumulate dust, mites and other types of dirt that prevent falling asleep and can affect health.

No matter how much we take care of the mattress, it always ends up getting dirty. The body’s own natural perspiration can generate stains on the surface, but there are more difficult ones, such as blood, urine and other body fluids, which we must remove to keep the bed in good condition. That is why we have prepared a list with 3 simple tips for cleaning mattresses.

1. Change the sheets, shake and air

It is important to consider the basic methods to prevent the mattress from getting too dirty and in this way to achieve a longer life. In this sense, the first thing is to establish a routine to change the sheets at least once a week. This prevents stains and bad odors from accumulating due to sweat, while preventing the proliferation of mites in the bed.

It’s also a good idea to shake out all sleeping gear, including sheets and pillows, to remove dust and dead skin that attract mites. For added durability, it’s a good idea to permanently attach a mattress protector, especially if there are children in the home.

Another important point is the level of ventilation in the room. It is always advisable to renew the air in the room, since otherwise the mattress can accumulate humidity and even mold, which can cause complex respiratory diseases over time. In this case, opening the windows for about 5 minutes a day can be of great help. This is particularly important during the winter, which is usually a period when we keep the air intakes closed.

Following these previous steps we can have a mattress in optimal hygiene conditions for daily use, however, experts recommend cleaning the mattress thoroughly at least every 6 months, since no matter how careful we are, there will always be a certain amount of dust, humidity and organic remains impregnated in the fabrics.

2. Vacuum the mattress regularly

The vacuuming process takes only a few minutes and removes dust, mites and dead skin particles. In this sense, it is good to know that the best Bosch vacuum cleaners of 2022 (you can find some purchase options here) have special nozzles for upholstery and fabrics, which are very appropriate for cleaning mattresses. In general, to maintain the hygiene of the mattress, it is enough to vacuum once a week.

If you have doubts about how to clean a mattress with a vacuum cleaner, the good news is that it is very simple, you just have to pass the nozzle slowly and gently over the entire surface. However, be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this could adversely affect the fibers of the mattress, causing it to lose its shape and padding.

3. Use baking soda to clean the mattress

When we think about how to remove dirt from the mattress, it is common for us to ask ourselves what substance to use. In this sense, it is necessary to mention that the detergents that we commonly use to wash clothes in the washing machine can be counterproductive in the case of mattresses. The main reason is that we would have to use a lot of water to completely remove the compound and this is impractical when it comes to cleaning stains from the mattress, so there are always residues of chemical substances, damaging fabrics and generating allergies in people.

To solve the problem, there are special soft products for fibers. In general, they are neutral liquid detergents, which means that they do not have toxic substances. However, some ingredients that we have at home can be used to remove sweat stains and eliminate dust mites without spending a lot of money. This is the case of sodium bicarbonate, a powder compound that can be dissolved in water and is abrasive, but delicate at the same time, making it very useful in household cleaning.

Cleaning with bicarbonate allows to eliminate the bad odors that accumulate in the mattress, for this, you can spread it on the surface, rub with a dry cloth and leave it for 1 hour. Afterwards, you can use a Bosch, Dyson, Einhell or any brand vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. If the bad smell persists, it is possible to repeat the procedure and leave the bicarbonate to act for 12 hours before vacuuming.

Baking soda can also be effective for removing dried blood stains from sheets and comforters. In this case, place 4 tablespoons of cold water with two tablespoons of baking soda in a container and mix well until completely dissolved. It is only necessary to use a cloth to apply the mixture on the fabric and leave it to act for half an hour. Afterwards, it is possible to wash in the washing machine using the appropriate program.

You can also clean the mattress with baking soda if there is a dried urine stain. For this you have to place the dust directly on the dirt and cover it with plastic, then you must let it act overnight and the next morning remove the dust with the vacuum cleaner. If the stain persists, then you can mix three tablespoons of baking soda with 250 ml of hydrogen peroxide, spray, leave to act and dry. This is a very useful trick for when children are potty training, as accidents always happen.

As we can see, there are simple answers to the question about how to clean a very dirty mattress, but it is important to consider certain preventive measures, to keep it in good condition, so that it is not necessary to resort to very invasive methods to remove dirt from the mattress. surface. In this way, it is possible to save time, effort and money.
