How to thermally insulate your home from the inside?

The thermal insulation of your home is the ideal tool to enjoy more pleasant sensations, both thermal and acoustic. An aspect that goes beyond how to insulate a wall and that can completely change the environment of your residence.

One of the great problems of many Spanish homes has to do with their interior insulation. An evil initially caused by the pleasant temperatures of our country, for which it was not believed necessary to insulate walls, windows and other elements of the houses that were being built. As if that were not enough, the arrival of the various real estate booms and the lack of adequate legislation in this regard caused thermal insulation to be almost a rarity in many homes built to this day.

The result is that most homes in Spain do not have adequate insulation. Something that translates into a double problem. On the one hand, the energy consumption of these houses is greater , due to the losses of cold and heat that they have. On the other hand, if the insulation is poor, noise-related problems also appear, which decreases comfort in the home.

Fortunately, today it is easy to find all kinds of thermal and acoustic insulation panels, weather stripping and other similar products, with which to achieve adequate interior insulation. If you want to improve the insulation of your home and enjoy better sensations, we will tell you everything you need to know.

How to insulate an already built house

The main problem that we find when it comes to insulating a built home is that the thermal insulation for interior walls is integrated into them during the construction phase. Once this phase is over, the isolation procedures become more expensive and complex.

However, there are some techniques with which it is possible to obtain adequate insulation. One of these procedures is to carry out an interior cladding. It is one of the most interesting solutions when it comes to insulating a wall with plasterboard. The idea is to place extruded polystyrene for walls, rock wool panels or a roll of reflective thermal insulation mounted on a metal structure in a kind of sandwich on the wall. The plasterboard panels are placed on top, to close the new wall. It is not a complex process, but part of the interior space of the house is consumed.

Another interesting solution is to resort to camera injection systems. This system is only suitable for those walls formed by two layers of bricks between which there is an air chamber. The idea is to inject a suitable insulating material between both chambers, for which small holes are made in the wall and the material is introduced with a hose. It is the closest we can get to a thermal insulation for interior walls without work.

These two systems are the most complex, but also efficient when it comes to applying different thermal insulation to the home. But if what you need is to insulate small spaces or specific walls, you can resort to simple solutions such as thermal insulating cork for walls. This material also reduces noise inside the room, being a highly effective thermal and acoustic insulation.

insulating the windows

Until now we have focused on wall insulation, but the truth is that there are other elements that we must take into account. Among them, windows stand out, which can be responsible for an energy loss of up to 15% of that used to heat or cool your home.

To execute this insulation, we will need to buy suitable weather stripping for these windows. In the case of sliding windows, D-shaped or P-shaped profiles are used, depending on the area of the window in which it is placed. In the casement models, which open inwards, large weather stripping is used and designed to create a hermetic seal on the closing area of the windows.

The advantage of these weather stripping is that, compared to everything we have mentioned for the insulation of the walls, they are elements that are very easy to assemble. To do this, the back of the weatherstrip includes a high adherence strip, which makes it easier to stick the weatherstrip on the window surfaces. You just have to clean them previously, with a little water and detergent. A simple process that you will amortize in a short time, since these strips do not have a high cost either.

By the way, in addition to the frames, it is also possible to install thermal insulation panels on the window panes, with which to prevent the cold from entering the interior. An easy-to-assemble solution at a very reasonable cost, which will help improve interior comfort. As an alternative, you can resort to good curtains. The latest developments on the market not only insulate you from the cold, but also from noise and light.

door insulation

As with windows, exterior doors are another space through which heat or cold can escape. It is true that the loss they generate is smaller but, if we can avoid it, the better.

The insulation process is similar to that of the doors, using specific weather stripping for this purpose. These are placed along the frame, creating a hermetic seal that prevents cold or heat from leaking inside. Regarding the lower area, it is enough to place a simple rubber insulating strip , which completes the sealing of the area attached to the floor of the house.
