Natural materials for decoration

For almost all of his life, human beings have resorted to natural materials to create a home. And after a period in which artificial materials have been predominant, the new ecological awareness has returned these natural products to be preferred in this type of use.

When it comes to decorating our home, we have two large groups of materials to choose from. One of them are materials of natural origin, obtained directly from nature and which, in recent years, have been in the background.

The other group is made up of artificial materials, derived from natural ones and which, despite their considerable versatility, pose a considerable environmental problem. Let us think, for example, of the ecological cost of plastics, porcelain, concrete or polyester, to name a few. Something to which are added the effects that some of these materials can cause in our environment when they deteriorate.

Fortunately, there are more and more people who are concerned about the origin of materials and who prefer to return to what is natural, compared to this ancient rise of what is artificial. If you also want to join this trend, here we will teach you everything you need to know about the origin of the materials and also how to decorate any room in your home with natural materials.

By the way, it should be remembered that natural material is one that comes from our environment and is treated without modifying it. Therefore, the treated wood remains natural, just like the cast iron. However, if we mix iron with carbon to obtain steel, then we would be dealing with an artificial material.

plant-based materials

Materials of plant origin are one of the most interesting sources both when it comes to building and decorating our home. Currently, modular-type wooden houses are becoming a very interesting alternative for those who do not want to resort to classic construction systems, which are more harmful to the environment.

However, wood can also be applied to conventional homes. From the floor to the ceiling, passing through the walls, the presence of all kinds of wood panels gives a very cozy touch to any room in our home, while tempering the interior sensations, through more efficient thermal control. Also vegetable is cork, which is used both to achieve thermal and sound insulation of any room in your home.

On the other hand, the presence of wood in our furniture is very common. Good wood furniture has always been a guarantee of comfort and elegance in our decoration projects.

What is not so well known is the presence of plant fibers , which we can apply in all kinds of circumstances. We are talking about elements such as rattan or hemp, which are used to create curtains and blinds, as seats for garden furniture or even to cover pots and other decorative objects.

Regarding textiles, compared to the rise of polyester and other fibers derived from petroleum, cotton or linen offer much more pleasant natural sensations. In addition, their uses are also multiple, so these textiles are ideal for curtains, table linen, bedding and any other use that we want to give these materials in our decorative project.

Materials of animal origin

Materials of animal origin are another alternative to decorate our home, in this case not having so much importance in the merely constructive aspect.

As proof of this we find textiles, where the queens are wool and alpaca, among others. These materials are found in upholstery, bedspreads, curtains or rugs, with which to give a special touch to any room. Something similar happens with natural leather, which is much more pleasant to the touch than artificial leather and has a longer useful life, with less waste generated in all its phases of use.

Since this section is not as wide as the other two natural segments, we do not want to forget about the candles. Some interesting decorative elements of animal origin, as long as they are made of beeswax. Perfect to give a special touch to any room.

Materials of mineral origin

The last section that we will analyze is the one that forms the materials of mineral origin. In this case, we are talking both about materials dedicated to the construction of the houses and their decoration.

Given the wide variety of this type of material, we will focus on the most interesting. Among them, we have marble and granite. These minerals are common when finishing floors and can also be interesting in the construction of bathroom furniture and other similar structures. Another interesting option is slate, widely used on exterior roofs and for ornamental details in any construction.

Obviously, in this section you will also find all the metallic minerals, which are part of both the structure of our house and the elements that decorate it. Here we would find iron, in its structural form or in furniture and accessories. Also copper, aluminum, nickel and many other metals, placed in this context provided they are used in their pure forms.

As last elements, there are two minerals that we want to highlight. One of them is plaster, widely used for plastering walls. The other is sand, used in construction, but also in making decorative elements or finishing off outdoor areas such as terraces or gardens. As we can see, the variety of this mineral kingdom is more than considerable.
