DIY: Make the most special hammock for your baby
Baby hammocks are one of the best-selling products on the market. This is due to their great utility and how comfortable they can be. In general, babies tend to really enjoy swinging in the hammock, as it takes them back to the time they were in the womb.
In the same way, the baby spending time in the hammock allows the mother to carry out other tasks at home or at work, and it is also possible for her to take a simple break from the daily grind. For this reason, having a baby hammock is necessary. However, it may be that you are not attracted to commercial models, and if you have manual skills you can build your child a hammock at home, which will be much cheaper.
In order to carry out the work, you have several options, which we will analyze below.
a wooden hammock
Wood is a sturdy material that can help you shape the base of your hammock. Its use can guarantee durability and stability, so you can trust that your little one will not fall.
This project may require some special tools such as a handsaw, hammer, nails, a tape measure, sander, paint, and other materials to give it the finish you want.
The base of the hammock can be square, so that it is easy to handle, with raised extensions that give height to the fabric that will be in the center to place the baby.
Take into account that everything must be symmetrical and duly sanded before assembling, since any splinter can be a danger to the infant. Also, use non-toxic paint, as well as varnish if you prefer to leave it natural.
Finally, cut and sew the fabric you have chosen for the hammock, you must take into account that it must be resistant and cannot cause allergies. Perhaps a 100% cotton fabric can give you what you expect, keeping your little one comfortable and safe.
Sew on the edge of the fabric some ropes for the tie, which you must do in the raised wooden supports and voila, you will have a nice hammock for your baby. You can put it inside or outside the house, as needed.
How to make a hammock step by step
There are other ways to make the best baby hammock, since we have already mentioned how functional and comfortable they are. To start with this manufacturing we recommend you have all the implements at hand. You’ll need:
- Approximately 3 meters long by 102 cm wide. Choose a hard, sturdy fabric like muslin.
- A 15 cm spring.
- A hook.
- A steel ring.
- A chain.
- A wooden board, with approximate measurements of 7.6 cm wide and 60 cm long.
- An instant lock ring.
Once you have all the necessary implements you can proceed to make the hammock.
The first step in making this baby swing is to work the fabric. To do this, close all the edges of the fabric, sewing in approximately 5 cm on each side. Then you must place the fabric on a spacious surface and fold it in half, determining the space you will give it for the baby to lie down.
We recommend that you make a seam on each side so that you can identify the area. You can reinforce this area by placing a double fabric if you wish to give it greater resistance.
Next, you will need to decide where you will hang the hammock. Since you won’t be able to move it from the spot, it’s best to decide based on what tasks you’ll be doing while keeping the baby in the swing.
When you have the right place, use a drill to make a hole in the ceiling and place the hook. You must make sure that the roof is resistant, that the hook is well placed and that the structure can be maintained without problems. In addition, we recommend that you check the hook continuously, to make sure that it does not loosen with use.
Place the spring on the hook. The spring is for the hammock to bounce around a bit as the child swings.
Taking into account the length of the hammock and the height you want to give it, measure the size of the chain you will use. It is convenient that the hammock is close to the ground, to avoid accidents.
Place the chain on the spring and the snap ring on the other side. Secure the ends of the fabric to the hammock’s overhead support, testing it for strength.
Now use the board to form a divider to open the hammock. Cut the edges of the board into a U-shape approximately 3/4-inch wide and 1-1/2-inch tall. Place it where you decide to open the hammock, making sure that the fabric is in the middle of the U-shaped openings. You can tie the ends of the wood with a rope on each side to secure it.
Before putting your baby to bed, test that the bouncer supports the weight with an object that has the same amount of mass.
How to weave a baby hammock
If you don’t want to make the fabric structure, you can decide to hand weave it, though it may well take you some time to finish this project. The main thing is that you have the right thread, it can be made of soft and resistant cotton, since most of them are anti-allergic and delicate with the child’s skin.
In general, we can say that the fabric will depend on your taste, it can be a wide design of symmetrical squares or small ovals that improve support and prevent the child from getting stuck in any division. This will also depend on your skills and knowledge with needles.
Also, the fabric provides adequate ventilation so that you can be comfortable and with a pleasant temperature. On the other hand, make sure that the stitches are secure and that there is no vulnerability in the fabric, to avoid accidents to regret.
