Many of us have seen the Harry Potter movies, others have read JK Rowling’s books, but not all of us know the main characters of the franchise. For that reason, we have created this list with the names of the Harry Potter characters, as well as their respective actors in real life. 

Harry Potter is one of the most popular movies in the world, the first of this saga was “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, which was released in 2001 and whose director was Chris Columbus. It earned three Oscar nominations in the following categories: Best Soundtrack, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. 

Below, we have compiled a list of 20 outstanding Harry Potter characters.

1. Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel and Jacob is the name of Harry Potter in real life, that is, of the actor who played this character, who at the age of 11 discovers that he is a wizard and is invited to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.. Also, it should be noted that this character also owned the powerful elder wand, thanks to which he defeated the evil Voldemort.

2. Hermione Granger, Emma Watson

She is part of the cast of protagonists, one of the most studious and intelligent magicians. In her first books, her role does not stand out much, however, it is from “The Prisoner of Azkaban” when this character develops more, as well as her abilities. On one occasion, Hermione breaks Harry Potter’s wand by casting an explosive curse on the snake, as the spell rebounded.

3. Minerva McGonagall, Maggie Smith

Minerva was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. She attended Hogwarts School and years later became a transfiguration teacher, head of Gryffindor house, and deputy head of the school. She was characterized by being a strict teacher and kept her students in order with the flick of a finger.

4. Albus Dumbledore, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon

Among the cast of Harry Potter are the actors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. The first actor brought to life the character of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts school. Due to the actor’s death at 72 years of age they had to choose another interpreter. That is why Michael Gambon gave continuity to the character from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. 

5. Ron Weasley, Rupert Grint

This is one of the protagonists of Harry Potter and the sixth son of Molly Weasley. Likewise, he is the best friend of Harry and Hermione Granger. Together they lived many adventures such as saving Potter’s godfather, Sirius Black, from the dementors in Azkaban. Also, he was the same age as Harry Potter and Hermione.

6. Rubeus Hagrid, Robbie Coltrane

He is known as a semi-giant wizard and was the Care of Magical Creatures teacher and gamekeeper at Hogwarts. Likewise, he belonged to the Order of the Phoenix and participated in several battles, among which we can mention the Battle of Hogwarts.

7. Draco Malfoy, Tom Felton

Draco is a pure blood wizard and was selected into Slytherin House by the Hat. Also, this character was a rival of Harry Potter throughout his school life. While at school he was made a member of the Inquisitorial Brigade. 

8. Vernon Dursley, Richard Griffiths

Vernon is Harry Potter’s uncle. He is a muggle and, after the death of Harry’s parents, he and his wife had to take care of him. He never agreed with his nephew and treated him badly. When he found out that Harry had received a letter from the school, he was angry, as he didn’t like magic.

9. Sybill Trelawney, Emma Thompson

She is the divination teacher in Harry Potter and predicted the prophecy about Voldemort. She also was part of the Order of the Phoenix, along with Hagrid, McGonagall and other powerful wizards. 

10. Severus Snape, Alan Rickman

This is another of the Harry Potter characters, a half-blood wizard. He was a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Potions master, as well as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

11. Horace Slughorn, Jim Broadbent

Professor Slughorn excelled at Potions for over 50 years. Also, he was head of Slytherin house. We also mention that he founded the club of eminences, a select group of outstanding students at Hogwarts.

12. Lord Voldemort, Tom Riddle

Lord Voldemort is the evil character in Harry Potter, a dark wizard and murderer. He was of mixed blood and was the most outstanding student in the school. Voldemort organized an army that became known as the Death Eaters and with it he did a lot of damage to others. Also, this character always wanted to own Harry Potter’s wand (check some options to buy at this link), that is, the elder one, since it was the most powerful of all. 

13. Sirius Black, Gary Oldman

A pureblood wizard, he was known as Snouts or Padfoot. Black along with three friends, including James Potter, were part of the Order of the Phoenix and the fight against Voldemort in the first wizarding war. Sirius was also godfather to Harry Potter.

14. Gilderoy Lockhart, Kenneth Branagh

He was the author of several books on monstrous creatures, in addition, he taught classes in Defense Against the Dark Arts. In addition to this, he received various awards as an Honorary Member and Knight of the Order of Merlin.   

15. Cedric Diggory, Robert Pattinson

Diggory was chosen for the Hufflepuff house and was a good sportsman. He became Seeker for the Quidditch team of the house he belonged to. Also, in the fifth year they made him prefect.

16. Lucius Malfoy, Jason Isaacs

Malfoy was a pureblood, Death Eater, and aristocratic wizard. He was a man faithful to the evil Voldemort. Likewise, he participated in the first and second wizarding wars. Also, he avoided being transferred to Azkaban, as he provided the names of several Death Eaters to the Ministry of Magic.

17. Dolores Umbridge, Imelda Staunton

She was a witch of short stature who always wore pink clothes. In addition, it should be noted that she was physically described as a large toad. Another important fact about her personality is that she was arrogant and haughty. 

18. Gellert Grindelwald, Michael Byrne

He was a pure-blooded English-Bulgarian character, also, he was known as a dark wizard. His ambition was to collect the three Harry Potter Hallows, to become the Lord of Death.

19. Neville Longbottom, Matthew Lewis

This character was characterized as an introverted and shy student, however, he was a great defender of his school. Also, he became a member of Dumbledore’s army and fought several times, for example, in the Battle of Hogwarts.

20. Remus Lupin, David Thewlis

Remus was of mixed blood and was a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. In his years of study he was part of the group “The Marauders”, along with James Potter, Harry’s father.
