Homemade whey recipe

When we have children, we should always have a first aid kit with band-aids and plasters, antipyretic for fever, an antiallergic, analgesic ointment, a thermometer for babies and oral serum for diarrhea. But sometimes the latter goes unnoticed or runs out, so it is essential to know how to prepare homemade whey.

No parent wants their child to get sick, but we know that for infants and young children, avoiding a fever or diarrhea is virtually impossible. Generally, these two symptoms along with vomiting are signs of illnesses that are very common in the first years of a baby’s life.

A high fever can cause dehydration, as can diarrhea and vomiting as a result of indigestion or a seasonal virus. In this sense, keeping the child well hydrated is essential so that the clinical picture does not worsen.

oral serum for children

In pharmacies you get many presentations of children’s whey, with special flavors such as tutti frutti or coconut to be more attractive to children’s palates and that do not need a prescription for their purchase. Some have specialized formulas and are sold as serum for diarrhea or serum for vomiting because they have electrolytes and restorative elements of the intestinal flora.

But, what is the oral serum for? We will understand the answer to this question with the definition of dehydration.

dehydration

When your body loses more fluids than you take in, we can say that there is dehydration. In this sense, your body runs out of the liquids necessary for its proper functioning, being necessary to restore the level of these liquids.

Anyone can suffer from dehydration, but infants, children and older adults are the population most susceptible to this condition. The main causes of dehydration in children are diarrhea and repetitive vomiting episodes. While in the elderly their condition favors the loss of sensation of thirst, in addition to the use of some medications increasing the chances of suffering from dehydration.

But, returning to children, special care must be taken in the evolution of these symptoms, since excess liquid stools and vomiting can quickly worsen the child’s health status.

For this reason, if the main home remedies for vomiting and diarrhea do not work, you can not hesitate to take the child to the nearest health service to be seen by a doctor.

Now, there are other circumstances in which diarrhea is harmless or is simply the result of poor digestion or excessive consumption of sweets, etc. In these cases, giving the child a chamomile tea for diarrhea can relieve digestive disorders and improve their health quickly, since the liquids and salts lost during episodes of diarrhea or vomiting are restored.

But, in the case of more persistent diarrhea, it will be necessary to administer oral rehydration salts to the child, which you can make yourself at home.

Here we show you some simple and very easy recipes to make.

How to make homemade whey?

Previously, our grandmothers prepared a jar of oral serum in the blink of an eye when a child at home had diarrhea. These days, it’s easier to go to the pharmacy and buy any artificially flavored whey.

However, learning to make homemade whey is knowledge that we all must have, because we do not know when it will be the moment when we will not be able to go to a pharmacy and we will need this solution to avoid dehydration of a family member or ourselves.

To prepare a liter of homemade whey you will need:

1 liter of filtered or boiled water (boil the water for 20 minutes and let it cool).

1 teaspoon of salt.

2 teaspoons of sugar.

Juice of 1 lemon.

A pinch of baking soda.

In a container, previously sterilized, serve the cold boiled water, add the other ingredients and mix until completely dissolved. Then, place the solution in the refrigerator, which must be ingested after each liquid evacuation or vomiting.

In the case of children, it is recommended to take it by spoonfuls several times a day, while the symptoms persist.

It should be noted that this preparation can be kept for a maximum of 24 hours. After this time, the homemade whey will have lost its properties and should be discarded.

Observations on the administration of homemade serum

Although this solution helps prevent severe dehydration, you should know that by itself it will not directly cure diarrhea or vomiting, especially if they are symptoms of a pathology that needs medical attention and treatment.

In addition, diabetic children and adults cannot ingest the homemade serum if they do not have the indications of the health specialist. And in the event that the symptoms worsen, no more time can be wasted and the emergency service must be attended immediately, especially if the child or adult presents the following signs:

Loss of appetite.

Tired and sunken eyes.

Dry mouth and skin.

Urine of dark color and strong smell.

Drowsiness and excessive fatigue.

Sinking of the fontanelle in babies.

Crying and irritability in children.

homemade physiological saline

Another home remedy that cannot be missing from your recipe book, even if it is not for dehydration, is physiological serum, which consists of a saline solution that does not irritate or itch, and is ideal for washing wounds, clearing up irritated eyes or nasal irrigation.

Its preparation is also very simple, you just have to mix a teaspoon of salt per cup of water and let the solution boil for 15 minutes in a covered pot. After this time, turn off the heat and let the physiological saline cool to room temperature.

Like the homemade serum for diarrhea, this saline solution is valid for 24 hours, since after this time some microorganisms can grow in it. Also, it is advisable to use a sterilized bottle to reserve the solution during use.

It is important to clarify that this physiological serum is not suitable for human consumption, since its use is topical and ideal for the treatment of wounds, rinsing the nostrils and other external uses.
