Children’s piñatas continue to be the center of attention on birthdays and other celebrations, not only in Spain, but also in other regions of the world. Although there are different designs, the good news is that they are generally very easy to make and do not require too many materials, making them an economical and fun option at the same time.
There are different types of piñatas and the complexity to make them can vary from one to another. For this reason, we have selected some of the most colorful but at the same time simple, so that you can make them with your own hands and even involve the little ones in the house in the process. Thus, making a piñata can be a family project at Easter or just for a garden party. Let’s see 4 easy and cheap piñatas to make at home.
1) Balloon Pinata
If you wonder how to make a homemade piñata, you should know that this is one of the simplest. You only need 1 medium balloon, from 30 to 45 cm approximately. In addition, it is good to have newspaper and white glue on hand, as well as recycled elements that you can use as decorations and a string to hang the piñata.
To start, you have to fill the balloon and tie a knot. It is important that it does not reach 100% of its capacity, as it could become too weak. Then, you have to cut strips of newspaper, to stick them on the surface of the balloon with white glue. You can leave the part of the knot uncovered, to be the mouth of the piñata.
When it has dried completely, you should place another layer of newspaper strips to make the structure more resistant. You can even do this process a third time for added durability. Then, you have to puncture the balloon, cutting with scissors below the knot. You will notice that the piñata is already solid enough to stand on its own.
The next step is to open two holes on the sides, near the mouth of the piñata, to add the string that will allow it to be hung. Now, you can decorate the surface to your liking. These types of children’s piñatas should be colorful, so you can use Hawaiian necklaces that you have left over from a party, as well as colored paper or any other colorful element that you have on hand.
If you don’t know what to put in a piñata like this, you should think about small and light toys, such as Lego Avengers pieces, as well as candies, chocolates and other sweets. Also, you can consult with the little ones in the house, since they always have interesting ideas when it comes to filling piñatas.
2) Mini homemade pinata
Pinatas for kids work for any occasion, so there’s no need to wait for the next birthday. In this sense, an interesting option to not spend a lot of money is to make a mini piñata. For this you only need a cardboard cup, double-sided adhesive tape, a piece of tissue paper, a rubber band, a colored ribbon, scissors and some candy to fill the piñata.
First of all, you have to place the tape on the base of the glass. For this, we must open a small hole and introduce the tape from the outside to the inside of the glass, pushing with the tip of the scissors. Then, we can make a double knot at the end of the ribbon that has remained inside the glass, as a security so that it does not come out.
The next step is to use the tissue paper to cut a circle 2 cm larger than the mouth of the glass, which will serve as a lid so that the treats do not fall out of the mini piñata. At this point, you can now insert the filling and use the rubber band to hold the circle of tissue paper in the mouth of the glass. To decorate, you can cut strips of tissue paper of different colors and place them around the glass with double-sided tape.
3) Cereal Box Piñata
If you don’t know how to make cardboard piñatas, this can be a good alternative. The idea is to use an empty cereal box to decorate it and fill it with sweets and small toys. You only need scissors, tissue paper, colored tape, a ruler and double-sided tape.
Among the personalized piñatas, this is one of the easiest. The first thing is to make some horizontal marks with the ruler on the surface of the cereal box. For this, you can use a pen or marker of any color. Of course, the lines must go through the entire box, including the sides. These are the references for later gluing strips of tissue paper.
You can make some fringes on the paper to give them the colorful touch that characterizes piñatas. Also, it is advisable to alternate the colors or combine the piñata according to the decoration of the party. If you don’t have double-sided tape, you can use white glue and a small brush.
If you want to make a homemade birthday decoration, we invite you to build this piñata in the shape of a burrito, since it is simple and at the same time very attractive. For this project, you will need 3 pieces of cardboard approximately 50 x 40 cm, as well as masking tape, scissors, white glue, different colored tissue paper, a hot glue gun, a pencil and a ruler.
It is good to start with the shape of the burrito. For this, you have to draw the figure freehand on one of the cardboard. Then, you have to cut it out and place it on the other cardboard, to copy the drawing exactly the same. These will be the two profiles of the piñata.
With the third piece of cardboard, we are going to make the outline of the burrito, which is what gives it volume. In this case, you must cut several strips 12 cm wide and 50 cm long, and then join both profiles with adhesive tape. It is important to leave a hole in the back of the burrito to fill the piñata.
The leftover cardboard is used to make the donkey’s pointed ears, cutting two triangle-shaped figures. You can use the hot glue gun to fix the ears correctly, one on each profile of the burrito.
As for the decoration, you only have to cut strips of tissue paper 10 cm wide, to make fringes and achieve a more attractive finish. It is best to start with the donkey’s legs and go up horizontally to the ears. Then, you must make two small holes in the spine to place the string. All that remains is to fill the piñata with toys and treats.
As we can see, birthday piñatas are not as difficult to make as it seems. Each one has a different level of complexity, but in general you don’t have to be an expert in crafts and it’s a project that everyone can participate in.
