Why does the baby have pimples on the face?

The arrival of a baby fills parents with expectations about their child; they hope that in addition to being healthy, he will look lush and smooth. However, there are conditions that could affect his delicate skin and therefore present rashes, redness and other imperfections that become a matter of concern, doubts, and the reason for the first visit to the pediatrician.

Parents expect a child to enter the world in perfect health, with a healthy, vigorous appearance and velvety skin. However, it may happen that shortly after birth a rash appears on the baby’s face, which could manifest itself in small yellowish eruptions or red pimples on the skin, very similar to common acne.

Medically, this condition is known as neonatal acne; benign pimples that appear on average in 20% of newborns. Baby acne usually occurs during the first months of life; in some cases it will disappear over time, while in others the condition may persist or worsen, requiring treatment by a pediatrician.

Symptoms and recommendations

A baby of 3 weeks or a little more than born, could present small white spots on the skin; either in the area of the back, neck or small pimples on the face. Such rashes are also very common on the cheeks or near the mouth, which makes many parents concerned and alert to its evolution.

In case of any of these symptoms, it is necessary to take care of the little one with good hygiene, cleaning it frequently with special baby wipes for its skin type. It is also convenient to wash it with warm water and a neutral soap that does not cause irritation. Likewise, it is advisable to use a soft cloth to properly dry the folds of your skin and keep your blankets, sheets, covers and blankets sterilized.

On the other hand, some experts recommend avoiding the baby’s contact with pets (dogs and cats), while the doctor evaluates his condition and determines whether or not he is allergic to these animals. Therefore, if there are canines at home, it is best to use dog parks and keep them away and entertained.

Causes of the appearance of pimples

Pimples in newborns usually do not represent a great inconvenience for the baby or for the parents, since they do not hurt or itch and usually disappear on their own in a short time. However, there are other disorders that affect the baby’s skin and are related to bacteria and viruses, such as measles, chickenpox, roseola, neonatal herpes and other blister-like rashes.

In general, among some of the causes of the appearance of benign pimples in babies we have.

neonatal acne

It is a skin condition that is often born with the baby; although it can also appear during the second or third week of life, affecting boys more than girls. They are identified as small white and red water-filled pimples that are mostly present on the cheeks. Their rash is rough and red in color and they are not associated with any food.

They arise because maternal hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands, which are transmitted through the umbilical cord. The good news is that they go away on their own, once the baby’s hormone levels drop.

infant acne

It is convenient to differentiate neonatal acne from infant acne. These granites usually appear between 2 or 3 months of life and can last up to 18 months of age. In these cases, not only do watery and reddish pimples appear, but also white and black dots appear (similar to juvenile acne) and almost always on the cheeks.

Until now, the causes that can cause this skin condition are not known exactly. However, experts have found in their investigations a family history of severe acne in children with infant acne; so it could be said that genetics, in part, is responsible.

Miliaria

Another condition that causes pimples in babies is miliaria. These are white dots on the face similar to small pearls, which take on a yellowish color and can measure 1 or 2 mm in diameter. They appear on the skin of the 1-month-old baby or during their first weeks of life.

They are rashes that affect the area of the nose, cheeks, chin and in some cases, outbreaks can occur on the legs and genitals. They appear due to the obstruction of the pores and the oily secretion of the skin. It is not a cause for alarm for parents, since they usually disappear when the child is 2 months old.

Sudamina

Sudamina is an alteration caused by heat or excess sweating that accumulates under the skin. It is very common in children born during the high temperatures of summer and, although it usually does not cause discomfort for the baby, it could cause some itching. They are tiny grains with a crystalline content similar to drops of water, which appear on the neck, forehead, armpits and trunk. They break easily when gently rubbing the child’s skin.

This type of pimples arise due to the immaturity of the sweat glands, which become clogged by retaining sweat. They usually appear because parents tend to overdress their children and also because of a fever.

Observation and control are the keys

Although the baby’s skin in normal conditions is usually smooth and soft, it is also very delicate and susceptible to different external or internal changes. Rashes, red cheeks, rashes or pimples on the face are clinical manifestations of some skin disorder or disease.

Therefore, regardless of whether it is spots on the baby’s skin, pimples around the mouth or some other condition on the child’s face or body, it is essential to consult with the pediatrician in order to diagnose the condition in a timely manner.
