Start the PC in safe mode in Windows 10

Due to various causes, the Windows 10 operating system may become unstable, display screens with various messages, slow down its performance, etc. To solve this type of inconvenience, there is a special way to start the computer that is worth knowing, since it allows you to identify the causes more easily.

There is no perfect operating system and the constant installation of programs that work together with it can affect its performance. Also, when you think about the amount of malicious software that has been developed, things get even more complicated. So when restarting Windows 10 doesn’t resolve your conflicts with your computer, take other steps. For these cases, the creators of Windows 10 software offer a way to fix problems : the safe mode or also known as Windows 10 safe mode.

Activation

In case it is possible to boot the computer, albeit with some instability, you can follow this list of steps:

1) Previously save what you have open, to avoid loss of information, then press the Start button, where you will find the option Shut down. Press this option to access the Standby, Power off and Restart menu. At this point, what you will do is press the shift button, on your keyboard, at the same time that you press the Restart button with the mouse. Remember to release the mouse button, so that the action is completed and you can continue with the options to restart in safe mode.

2) Even if the menu that appears does not show you the phrase Safe mode anywhere, do not worry. Choose the Troubleshoot option to access the option.

3) Next, you will find a new window, which is more focused on trying to restore the system. Here, you may find other alternatives, depending on the version of Windows 10 you have installed. However, the option we need, Advanced Options , is a common button in all of them. press it.

4) The next option you will have to choose will be Startup Settings. This will allow you to make changes and establish a different way than the traditional way to boot Windows 10 safely and choose between several alternatives, depending on the actions that will be taken later.

5) What you will see, next, will be a menu like the following. Don’t worry if from this moment on the interface changes and you have to do without the use of the mouse. You just have to follow the instructions given in the messages and use your numeric keyboard. In this case, we will choose option 4, 5 or 6 (we will talk about them in the next section, so you can get to know them better). All of these options allow you to initialize Windows 10 with specific features to repair corruption and restore some services.

And what happens if the computer does not boot?

If the damage interferes too much and Windows 10 won’t boot, you can still enter safe mode. The process involves accessing the recovery mode or better known as WinRE. This consists of pressing the power button for a period of 10 seconds. Later, turn the computer back on, but you will not let it do it completely.

Instead, you will turn it off again, pressing the switch for 10 seconds. Then try again to turn on the computer and press the button for 10 seconds. Finally, press the power button again, but allowing it to boot. At this point, a blue screen will appear with several options, including the option to boot into safe mode.

What is safe mode for?

We have already talked about how you can start in safe mode, to repair damage to the operating system. Now, we will focus a little more on explaining in which cases it can be useful to use this Windows 10 boot option.

Let’s start with the following fact: the operating system is the base program on which the entire software infrastructure of a computer is based. It is the one who manages the resources and the first program that is activated when you press the power button. If at any time it conflicts with another program , there is a hardware failure or it is attacked by a virus, it can exhibit unusual behavior. Because of this, we see the dreaded blue screens and, in general, the computer does not work as expected.

It is at this point that it is very useful to modify the common Windows 10 startup parameters, so that it starts with only the essential and generic components , as a starting point to put everything back in order. In other words, it’s like trying to repair a shelf by removing everything on it. This makes it easier to find where the damage is.

Principal functions

The following are the most common reasons why Windows 10 may start in safe mode.

Uninstall software: If you find that it was after adding a new program that everything got complicated with your computer, you can remove it from this type of startup.

Scan for malware: In the case of suspected viruses, this mode allows you to run the antivirus and remove files related to the infection more safely.

Update drivers: It may be that a new component is causing conflicts, due to incompatibility with its drivers. New updates can be checked for and installed from Windows 10 trial mode.

Restore the system: Windows 10, through starting in safe mode, allows us to return to a previous point of the operating system, which we have previously saved. This can be useful when operating system updates cause conflicts.

Safe mode types

There are basically 3 options to get into Windows 10 safe mode (if chosen from the blue window of the Startup Settings menu). We will briefly explain them so you know when they can be used:

  1. Safe mode: This option is the most basic of the Windows 10 safe boot, but you will still be able to use the Windows interface, that is, the windows one. In this way, you will have a comfortable environment to resolve conflicts. In this case, the internet function is not available, so you will not be able to browse.
  2. Safe Mode with Networking: If your computer is experiencing driver issues, then you may need to connect to the internet to download other versions. In this case, the most recommended mode is Safe Mode with Networking. Thus, you can access resources that are on another device in your office or the URL of the manufacturer of the component that has caused the failure, to mention a few examples.
  3. Safe mode with command prompt: Although it is Windows 10, safe mode with command prompt requires more in-depth knowledge, since you will have to use very specific commands to tell the computer what action you want it to perform.

We hope that this information is useful and that you have a clearer notion of what it means to start Windows 10 in safe mode on computers, to restore your system and work as expected.
